A lot of the time, photography is a solitary pursuit. You get inspired, grab your camera and head out without thinking of anything else but the creative thought smashing around in your brain. Yes, the whole lone gunman thing is cinematically badass but once in a while it is kinda nice to have someone else driving the getaway car.
Shooting with another person can actually help push your process in certain situations. By yourself, you can sometimes be far too laser focused and caught up on some minuscule detail that ends up overriding your organic approach, making you fall into second guessing everything you are trying to accomplish.
Photography with a second shooter helps push you along knowing there is another shot to get. Nowhere is this more apparent than at an event where the shooting becomes fast and furious and the clock is set against you (not to mention the ubiquitous client shotlist!). Sure, having that other person allows you to split up the work but some friendly competition for “best shot of the day” will push you to your creative limit. Hell, a little wager at the start may even get you a free pint at the end of the day.
Take a friend to a shoot or organize a group outing and see how there is creative strength in numbers when you don’t hit the water by yourself.
