IF IT’S GOING TO BE THAT KIND OF SHOOT, I’M GOING TO STICK MY TRIPOD IN THE MASHED POTATOES

Who doesn’t like a good wedding? Lots of photographers, that’s who. Sadly, there can be a bias behind photographing a wedding as some among us feel it is beneath them because “it’s not creative enough” or “it’s for amateurs”. Well, I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth (maybe as far from the truth as the earth being flat and birds not being real).

Anytime I speak to someone starting out, they always ask ”How do I take better pictures?”. My response is always the same – go shoot some weddings! Start out volunteering to do a few (believe me, there is always someone looking for everyone’s favourite price point of “free”), get some experience under your belt (which you absolutely will) and start building a reputation for yourself.

These events will throw you in the deep end with spontaneous creativity, uncontrolled lighting, and public relations, not to mention physical and mental endurance. Afterward, it is also a great way to hone your post-production skills, as well as realizing how Lightroom and Photoshop are equally important tools as much as your camera is.

However, the caveat here is that wedding photography is not for the faint of heart. You only get one shot at it, so preparation is (if not probably) the most important element to consider along with all the other skills you will need.  Yes, there is certainly an element of risk for an event where there is no do-over or opportunity to schedule a reshoot. However, the experiential rewards that you will receive will make you a better shooter quicker than you ever dreamed of.

So, if you’re out shooting and someone asks if you photograph weddings, the answer is always “I do”.
